School of Metallurgy and Energy traces its roots back to the majors of Ironmaking and Steelmaking established in 1953. In 1999, the School of Metallurgy and the School of Materials merged to form the School of Materials and Metallurgy. The School of Metallurgy and Energy was founded in 2024. It consists of three departments: the Department of Metallurgical Engineering, the Department of Energy and Power Engineering, and the Department of Energy Storage Science and Engineering.

The School offers a first-level doctoral program and a postdoctoral research station in Metallurgical Engineering, interdisciplinary second-level doctoral programs in Intelligent Metallurgy and New Energy & Energy Storage Technology, and a professional doctoral program in Materials and Chemical Engineering. At the undergraduate level, it offers three majors: Metallurgical Engineering (including the Dual-Degree Program in Digital and Intelligent Metallurgy), Energy and Power Engineering, and Energy Storage Science and Engineering. Metallurgical Engineering is designated by the Ministry of Education as the university's priority development discipline during the "14th Five-Year Plan" period. It is also a key discipline, a dominant discipline in Hubei Province, a discipline under construction for "domestic first-class disciplines" in Hubei Province, a national first-class undergraduate major construction site, and has passed the China Engineering Education Accreditation.

The school boasts a high-level faculty team with a total of 77 professional teachers, including 3 dual-employed academicians, 4 national-level talents such as those listed in the National Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talents Project, National Ten-Thousand Talents Program, 2 experts enjoying special government allowances from the State Council, and more than 20 provincial high-level talents. It has successively won important awards such as the Second Prize of the National Award for Progress in Science and Technology, the Second Prize of the National Teaching Achievement Award, and the First Prize of the Provincial Award for Progress in Science and Technology.

The school has built several scientific research platforms, including the State Key Laboratory of Refractories and Metallurgy, the Key Laboratory of Ferrous Metallurgy and Resources Utilization of the Ministry of Education, the Hubei Key Laboratory of New Process of Steel Metallurgy, the China-Africa Low-Carbon Metallurgy Research Center, the Hubei Engineering Research Center for New Technologies of Anode Materials for Energy Storage Batteries, and the Hubei High-Value Patent Cultivation Center.
